User Education Class On Effective Search Strategies and Mendeley With Second Year Data Analytics Students, Centre for Mathematical Sciences - 30 March 2023

On 30th March, 2023, Centre for Mathematical Sciences invited the library to share topics about the Searching Strategies and the Basics of Using Mendeley for the Research Methodology course (BSD2712). The class was held online through Microsoft Teams and was attended by second year Data Analytics students. Also participating was the Centre for Mathematical Sciences senior lecturer, Dr. Noraziah Adzhar.
The class objective was to give participants the necessary skills on effective searching techniques in their respective fields. Ms. Affida Abu Bakar, a librarian from the Education & Research Unit, began the class by introducing participants to various searching strategies for finding academic resources, including scholarly articles, books, and conference proceedings. She also emphasized the importance of effectively using search terms and provided tips on how to refine searches to get more relevant results.
The second half of the class focused on Mendeley, a reference management software. Ms. Affida Abu Bakar demonstrated the basics of using Mendeley to organize and manage references and citations, including how to import references from academic databases and how to generate references in different citation styles. Participants were also shown how to use Mendeley to collaborate with others and share references.
Throughout the class, participants were encouraged to ask questions and participate in discussions. Overall, the user education class was a success, with participants gaining valuable knowledge on effective search strategies and the basics of using Mendeley. The Library has also committed to continuing user education classes to assist students and faculty members in developing the skills needed to conduct effective searches in their respective fields.
